What's "Proffee"? A Dietician Weighs In On The Protein Hack

"Proffee," a combination of protein powder and coffee, is becoming a popular trend for a morning boost. But is it really a health hack? We asked a dietitian for her take on the new protein coffee trend.

The latest trending drink, "proffee," combines coffee and protein powder—here’s what a dietitian has to say about its benefits and potential drawbacks.

If you’ve scrolled through social media lately, you might have come across a trending drink called “proffee.” This viral concoction combines two of the most beloved morning staples: coffee and protein powder. The idea is simple: mix a scoop of protein powder with your coffee for an energizing, protein-packed beverage to kickstart your day. But is "proffee" actually a healthy choice? We spoke with a dietitian to break down the pros and cons of this growing trend.

What Is "Proffee"?

"Proffee" is a term used to describe the combination of coffee and protein powder. The drink typically involves adding a scoop of protein powder (usually whey, plant-based, or collagen) to your morning cup of coffee, whether hot or iced. Proponents of proffee claim that it provides the benefits of both caffeine and protein in one easy-to-make drink, helping to energize the body and keep you feeling full longer. But before you jump on the proffee bandwagon, it's important to understand what makes this drink tick and whether it's really a nutritious choice.

Dietitian’s Take on Proffee: The Pros

We asked registered dietitian Sarah Thompson to weigh in on this trend. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Helps Increase Protein Intake

"One of the major benefits of proffee is that it can help boost your protein intake, especially for those who struggle to meet their daily protein goals," Thompson explains. "Protein is essential for muscle repair, immune function, and keeping you full throughout the day." Adding protein powder to your coffee can be an easy way to get in an extra 10-20 grams of protein, depending on the type and amount of powder you use.

2. Supports Muscle Maintenance

For those who work out regularly or have an active lifestyle, proffee can be a great option to support muscle recovery. "Coffee on its own gives you a burst of energy, but pairing it with protein can help fuel your muscles and reduce soreness after a workout," Thompson notes. Having protein in the morning is also helpful for muscle maintenance throughout the day.

3. Keeps You Full and Satisfied

Coffee can be a great way to start the day with an energy boost, but it doesn’t always help curb hunger. Adding protein to your coffee may help with appetite control. "Protein is known to be more satiating than carbs or fats, and combining it with coffee can help you stay full longer, reducing the chances of snacking between meals," she adds.

4. Convenient and Quick

For those with busy mornings, making a quick proffee can be an easy, on-the-go breakfast option. Instead of spending time preparing a separate breakfast, adding protein to your coffee streamlines the process without compromising your protein intake. It’s perfect for anyone who’s short on time but still wants a satisfying, nutrient-dense start to their day.

The Cons: What to Keep in Mind

While proffee may sound like a great idea, there are some considerations to keep in mind before incorporating it into your daily routine.

1. May Cause Digestive Issues

For some individuals, combining coffee with protein powder can lead to digestive discomfort. Coffee is naturally acidic, and some people may find that the combination of coffee and protein powder irritates their stomach. "If you’re prone to acid reflux or digestive issues, drinking proffee may not be the best option for you," says Thompson. Additionally, certain protein powders (especially whey protein) can cause bloating or gas in sensitive individuals. If you’re considering adding proffee to your routine, it’s important to choose a protein powder that agrees with your digestive system.

2. Can Add Extra Calories

While protein is an essential macronutrient, it's important to be mindful of the additional calories that come with adding protein powder to your coffee. "If you’re not careful with the portion sizes, the extra calories from protein powder could add up, especially if you’re using large scoops or flavored powders that contain added sugars," Thompson warns. Be sure to account for these calories in your overall diet if you're tracking your intake.

3. Not a Replacement for a Full Meal

While proffee can be a quick breakfast option, it shouldn't replace a full, balanced meal. "If you only have protein coffee for breakfast, you might miss out on other important nutrients such as fiber, healthy fats, and carbohydrates," Thompson notes. To ensure a well-rounded diet, it’s a good idea to pair your proffee with something like whole grain toast, fruit, or nuts.

The Bottom Line: Is Proffee Worth It?

Ultimately, proffee can be a convenient and protein-rich beverage to incorporate into your routine, especially if you're trying to increase your protein intake or need a quick breakfast. However, it's not without its potential downsides, such as digestive discomfort or excessive calorie intake, especially if consumed in large amounts or too frequently. As with any trend, it’s important to listen to your body and find what works best for you. If you're someone who loves coffee and wants to boost your protein intake, proffee can be a good option. But make sure to choose high-quality protein powders, and don't rely on proffee as your sole source of nutrients for the day.
